Renting For Profit Rental margins, owner side

Rental profitability, plainly

Gross rent is not the number that pays you.

Renting For Profit writes about the gap between what a rental collects and what an owner keeps. Vacancy between residents, the cost of getting a unit back to rentable, maintenance that was deferred until it was not optional, damage nobody billed for, and the fee stack sitting on top of the nightly rate.

Short-term and long-term both, because the leaks are the same five leaks with different clocks.

What this site is for

The editorial line

Most rental advice is written about revenue: raise the nightly rate, fill the shoulder season, add a hot tub. Revenue is the easy half. The half that decides whether a property is worth owning is the cost side, and it is mostly invisible because it arrives as a hundred small events rather than one bill.

So the rule here is simple. Every claim on this site carries a named source, and where we cannot verify a number at its source, we leave it out and say the number is unknown. Ranges from operator surveys are labelled as surveys. Figures out of public filings are labelled as filings. Arithmetic we did ourselves is labelled as arithmetic.

About

Who writes this

Renting For Profit is written by its editors for people who own or manage rental property and want the arithmetic rather than the encouragement. Guides are unsigned by design: nothing here rests on who wrote it, only on what it cites.
